How to Make Soil Soup

Soil Soup is a liquid fertilizer and is easy to make. The "passive" method is free and cheap. There are many variations to making the soup, but this will be the easiest to do. It is made out of mature compost, turned into a soup. Don't spend money on liquid fertilizers when you can make your own. Well-steeped soil soup is rich in microorganisms that are highly beneficial to your plants' growth and health. Nutrients and minerals are readily absorbed by your herbs, plants, flowers or vegetable gardens. It is a mild, organic liquid fertilizer that provides live organisms that improve the soil and does not burn your plants like store bought fertilizers.

It is a very simple process that dates back to ancient Europe. All you have to do is soak compost in water for a few days and the compost will give off nutrients and minerals to the water, which is then drained off for use in feeding all of your garden plants. This is a passive soup recipe. An "active" soup recipe uses an aerated method.

Things You Will Need:

· Mature compost ready for use
· Cheese cloth or an other tightly porous fabric for straining
· 2 metal buckets or containers with lids

Making Soil Soup:

· Fill a metal bucket one-third full of finished, mature compost.
· Add purified water to near top of the bucket. Cool, non-chlorinated, and highly oxygenated water is used. Chlorine kills microorganisms and is commonly used in municipal water systems.
· Let this "soup" mixture steep for three to four days to a week or 10 days, stirring each day.
· Strain the soup through old pantyhose, socks, cheesecloth or other tightly porous fabric into another bucket.
· Take remaining compost solids and return them to the compost bucket.
· Dilute the remaining liquid with water so it's the color of a watered down soup or weak tea.

Feed your indoor plants soil soup according to each plant's requirements (check seed packets and gardening books for details).

Tips:

· You may also buy a compost tea bag; fill the bag with mature compost and steep bag in bucket of pure water.
· If used for foliar application (sprayed on the leaves) you need to strain the soup through fine cheesecloth to remove small particles that can clog the sprayer.
· Do NOT use a sprayer that has been used for chemical sprays. It will kill the bacteria and fungi. Even if you rinse it out, there is generally a residue left that makes it useless for organic spraying.
· If going organic, then only use organic materials, avoiding all that contain chemicals.
· Use soil soup to replace chemical-based fertilizers, pesticides, and fungicides to be more protective of the environment by going "green".
· Pure compost tea is often too strong for your plants. Before applying the tea to your plants, mix 10 parts water with one part compost tea. This 10:1 ratio dilutes the nutrient levels, so the tea can be safely applied.
· To speed up the process, you can simulate the aeration method by shaking the container enough to produce froth on the surface.

Important Note: The liquid nutrients in the soup are used immediately by your plants. Because it is in liquid form, it can wash out of your soil quickly. Frequent applications are recommended.

Fear Factor Parties

My daughter wanted to have a fear factor birthday party. I researched and planned and we came up with very creative ideas. At the last moment (of course), she changed her mind and thought it would be "too scary" for her, so we decided a hula party would be more appropriate. However, the ideas we came up with together were too good to not share!

Gross Out Game: You can't have a fear factor party without making them eat something disgusting. However, if you don't want kids puking on your back porch, there are many things you can combine to make them "think" it's really something gross.

Setup: Place all of your items on plates and cover them with linen napkins. Place a tag in front of each item corresponding to a number. Include name tags on the plates labeled kitty litter, pig blood, etc.

Game: Break out into 2 teams. Have each player roll the dice and reveal the plate they must eat. Set a timer for 1 minute and they must finish as much as they can. The group who ate the most wins!

Ideas to make are:

Chocolate covered slugs- green beans dipped in chocolate

Kitty Litter - cake made to look like kitty litter

Goat eyeballs - peeled grapes

Baby poop- chocolate pudding in a new diaper. Make sure you have lots of paper towels for their faces

Baby pee- soak a diaper in Mountain Dew. Squeeze it in a glass in front of the kids for effect. Make them drink it.

Night Crawlers- sour worms dipped in honey and crushed oreos

Snot - pistachio pudding

Cow Brains - chicken dumplings mixed with red food coloring, blue food coloring and 1 cup of corn syrup

Pig blood - V8 juice and bits of bacon bits

Chocolate covered ants - chocolate covered slivered almonds

Baby puke - baby food spinach

Pet Rat - gummy rat dipped in white chocolate. You can find other bug candy at http://www.insectcandy.com

For kids more daring: Real chocolate covered bugs - real crickets and meal worms in chocolate!

Chicken feet - you can find them at any Asian food store

Sardines - put on a platter of seaweed for effect

Vegemite - unless your Australian, this stuff tastes gross!

Head cheese, oysters, tofu, fish eggs, tongue, liver - other great treats!

Other great games

Cat vs dog - line up 2 teams. Place 1 dog bowl and 1 cat bowl 20 feet away from the start line. Give each team a sack of dry dog food or cat food. The object of the game is to have the kids stick their heads inside the sack, pick up the food into their mouths or a spoon depending upon your comfort level and run to the other side and spit the food out into the bowl within 5 minutes. Whoever has the most food in the bowl wins!

Cricket catch - You can purchase crickets at any pet store. in fish tank with a lid put the crickets inside with yellow flags. Take turns pulling the flags out of the tank. If a cricket escapes, the player must catch the cricket and put it back into the tank before they can catch the flag.

Obstacle course- you can create any type of obstacle course in your backyard. Use things around your house like the swing-set, the bottom of the pool, and up a tree Attach yellow flags with Velcro at points with numbers. This event is best for one child at a time - so either pick a leader or take turns.

What's in the box? Purchase 2 or 3 a box with a latch and a few padlocks. Inside one of the boxes place a yellow flag and lock it. Put a rubber snakes inside the other boxes and secure with a padlock. Set the keys aside to the "snake" boxes" but keep the "flag" box key. Inside a bucket mix cooked noodles, coffee grounds, oil, and water. Mix together until nice and runny. Gather as many keys as you can find. Toss the key to the "flag box" and the other miscellaneous keys inside the bucket. The object of the game is to dig inside the gooey bucket to find the correct key to the correct box. Make sure you have a spare set of keys to the "flag" box just in case.

Decorations and Party gifts

Party stores sometimes carry fear factor party kits. These usually contain fear factor tape, decorations, yellow and black balloons. If your on a budget or can't find the party kits you can always use different accents of yellow and black, caution tape and plastic bugs taped on the door or hallway.

For party gifts the candy warehouse makes great fear factor candy. Yellow and black bags secured with ribbon and bugs is an inexpensive way to give the kids the creeps. You can also give each child a certificate stating "I survived... Fear Factor party!" The best way to individually create certificates is to use any Microsoft program (I recommend MS Publisher) and the fear factor logo.

I'm sure the kids and the parents will have a blast. If my daughter doesn't get the courage one day, I'm sure my son will definitely want to gross out his friends!

Painting Business - 13 Point Checklist of Essential Tools Most Needed to Start a Painting Business

If you are considering starting a commercial or residential painting business you will only need some basic low-cost tools to start with. You can buy other tools as more jobs come along and with your down payments. Here is a list of the most essential painting business tools needed to get you started.

1.) Quality Cage Frame - Also known as a paint roller. Wooster and Purdy both have strong, commercial-use cage frames sold at most professional paint stores.

2.) Extension Pole - Get yourself a good medium-size fiberglass extension pole for rolling out walls and ceilings.

3.) Wall-Sander - I always sand walls and ceilings before I roll them out. It cleans up cobwebs and anything else that needs to be knocked down to make the walls and ceilings smooth.

4.) Roller Bucket - I use Wooster's roller bucket. It is tall, square and has a lid. It is made out of durable plastic and balances a lot better than a paint tray and washes out easy. It's a must have.

5.) Cut-in Bucket - I like to put some paint in a small plastic bucket for cutting in. There are small 1-gallon buckets of drywall compound that when empty make a great cut-bucket plus they have a lid. They will last for years.

6.) Step Ladder - A regular wooden 5-foot step ladder works perfect for most homes. If I need a 6-foot ladder I have an aluminum one for that. Most of the time all I need is my 5-footer and I am only 5'6" so there you go.

7.) 16' Extension Ladder - Great for stairwells or ranch-style exterior jobs. I use my 16-foot extension ladder more than any other size. I also have 20' and a 24' extension ladders, but i couldn't get by without my little 16-footer.8.) Drop Cloths - I like using the runner type the most. They are inexpensive, light to carry and can be moved around the room easily. I also have 9 x 12's on hand.

9.) Fluorescent Light - Interior painting without a fluorescent light is nearly impossible, especially on a cloudy day. Fluorescent light is a nice white light that is great for painting and shows up the colors in their true form.

10.) Tool Bucket - An empty 5-gallon bucket makes a great tool bucket. I keep my pliers, a hammer, razor-blade knives, a caulk gun, etc., in my tool bucket.

11.) Small Fan - I bought a blower type fan made by Stanley Tools from Walmart. It dries out walls and ceilings quickly so you can get back to work cutting in and moving around the room without it being wet.

12.) Drywall compound - I hate Spackle. It flashes under paint jobs. I use the Sheetrock brand of 90-minute quick-dry drywall compound found at Lowes or other hardware stores for around a bag. It will last me all year long. It is the powder formula and is easy to mix up right on the job with water and a small cut bucket. This way you don't have to carry a heavy 5-gallon pale around with you that can also freeze during the wintertime and can get lots of chunks in it over time.

13.) Caulk Gun - I use painters caulk all the time to fill small gaps between woodwork, trim and walls. Most paint stores have it on hand. I use the 35-year interior/exterior type.

So there you have it. If you are considering starting your own painting business and want to know how much it will cost to get started this list will help you. I would guess off hand that everything on the list totals around 0. If you already have a step ladder and even a small extension ladder, this will cut the start up cost down considerably.

Ice Bag - Keeping Wine Chilled - The Perfect Tool for Outdoor Entertainers

Keeping wine chilled when entertaining outdoors is always a challenge. Looking for something effective and portable to help you keep your wine cold? Depending on your needs, there are many options for you to consider.

Vacu Vin Wine Sleeves - Portable and effective, these wine chillers work quickly to keep your wine cold. Made from a gel product that freezes after a few hours in the freezer, this product works well for times when you have easy access to a freezer.

Ravi Instant Wine Cooler - Even more portable, the Ravi is a very different wine cooling solution. Instead of cooling the bottle, it is inserted in to the neck of the bottle and chills the wine directly. It will work for about 90 minutes after being removed from the freezer.

Ice Bag - An inventive product that combines the best of a traditional wine bucket with the convenience of a wine bag. The durable bag is collapsible and can be carried conveniently when packing up for a picnic or a tailgate. It is easy to carry, so when you are setting up your backyard for a casual neighborhood barbecue, you can easily transport many bottles of wine in one trip. The Ice bag is reusable and dishwasher safe, so not only will it make entertaining easier, it will also simplify clean-up!

Your friends will love the Ice Bag too! Looking for a unique way to present a bottle of wine at a dinner party? Use the bag instead of presenting your wine in a traditional wine bag. Not only will the wine you present already be chilled, but your unique hostess gift will be the talk of the party.

Don't like to drink white wine? This wine chilling bag is perfect for champagne, large beer bottles, bottle water and more. Whatever beverage you are chilling, this product is the perfect solution.
